Being Earth-friendly is something that wasn't a priority in my home until just over a year ago. That's when Joe suddenly became environmentally aware from several sources all at once. And now he's all about being green - from driving a hybrid to switching our lightbulbs to carrying reusable bags, we've made a lot of changes in the past year or so.
One area that we haven't explored much in our home is environmentally-friendly cleaners. This has been on my mind lately as I've been tackling some projects around the house. A quick search turned up instructions for how to make a non-toxic cleaning kit as well as many companies that manufacture green cleaning supplies. I'm pretty lazy but I think I can handle mixing up my own cleaners considering the benefits.
I think I'll make this my next foray into the world of green - unless one of you has a better idea!
Participation in the posting extravaganza is simple (and updated from my original announcement). I felt bad about limiting this to "the Continental US" because, well, it's Earth Day. Not Continental US Day. Limiting to just those in the lower 48 negates the entire purpose of Earth Day considering we all live on the same planet (except maybe those of you in Russia - there's something weird going on over there).
Here are the new guidelines:
1. Write a post on your blog about a way that you support a clean environment. That's it. To be eligible for the prize, your link must be entered into Mr. Linky by 11pm (EDT) tonight. I will verify links throughout the day to make sure the simple rules are followed and reserve the right to remove links if necessary. Tomorrow, I'll let random.org draw a winner from the Mr. Linky participants.
2. Include a link back to this site in that post.
3. Add a link to your site in Mr. Linky below.
Oh, the new prize? It's not much but I felt I should offer something. So if random.org shows you some love, I'm offering to create a button for your blog (or a header image or a signature, one of whatever you like). In addition, I'll include linkage to your blog in my sidebar for two weeks. Yeah, this place isn't super high traffic but it's something. Best of all, it doesn't create any waste and has a non-existent carbon footprint!
Including the button isn't required but it's there if you'd like to use it.

As a closet Russian I feel a bit umcomfortable...
We switched to environmentally cleaners a couple of years ago, some of them were so naff you ended up using more, meaning we weren't sure which was doing more damage to the environment! We switched some back, figuring we'd rather have a clean and bacterialess something-or-other. Recently we've tried a few more environmentally friendly onces, and they are getting better!
Great idea! Can I talk about the earthworms I love?
I make my own cleaner based on a "recipe" I found. It's fabulous!
I am so jealous of your hybrid car! And I'm going to check into this make-your-own cleaner business!
LOVE the idea of a giveaway prize that doesn't contribute to the carbon footprint. Thanks!
Make your own cleaning kit?! I love that. Wonder if it's something I can make the boy do...
(I like seventh generation's orange cleaner - it got the grease off my oven hood when even bleach wouldn't work)
Your prize is perfect. Earth friendly, cost-efficient, and something everybody (I'm pretty sure) would love to have. I won't write any more, because you'll start saying really really "nice" things about me and contests again. ;)
Happy Earth Day Cate! Thanks for hosting the day for us!
Cool, I'll do this later today!
Thanks for doing this!
I'm assuming the change to the rules means I can join in. So, I did just that. :)
I was so tired from hugging my trees I nearly forgot to do this. :)
Fabulous Earth Day extravaganza, Cate! I love that the prize is all electronic.
Happy Earth Day!
Thanks for that website, awesome! I have been using a 50/50 vinegar/water mix for windows and mirrors for the last little while and it works great. With a little one around, I'm trying to use less chemicals to clean with. Oh and I've been mopping with vinegar too, for years.
First, the "challenge" you gave me via Twitter was accepted. Post is done and on my blog.
Secondly, I'm here to offer an idea for a "green" cleaner. Plain ol' baking soda. I bought a 12 lb. bag at Sam's Club (yes, I know...excessive. But it will last forever) and I use the stuff to scrub out my kitchen sink, bath tub, and various other applications (when used with other products - like vinegar). I love the stuff!
Dang girl! I already posted before I read this. Does talking about baby chicks count?
I'm having so much fun reading all of your comments and posts. Suddenly I feel like I'm not doing very much!
Will all my kids FIT into a hybrid?!
This is a great idea, Cate! I wasn't sure I'd be up for participating, but I did, and it gave me a good break from dwelling on the recent events in my household.
Yay, the Earth!
Okay, I tried to write a blog post about it and I think I'd end up losing readers because it was so boring. Not an inspirational afternoon for me, apparently. :) So I'll put it here instead.
I like to buy things used--not everything, but when I do buy used, I not only save money, but I'm giving something a second life. It doesn't end up in the landfill so quickly, and I'm usually getting something local, that didn't have to be shipped to me. It's a great way to be both frugal and environmentally conscious.
In general I'm not nearly as environmentally conscious as I should be. Today has me thinking about that a bit.
So--not entering the contest but thanks for getting my mind working a bit, on an important topic!
Happy Earth Day! We clean with vinegar and baking soda!
What is this 'cleaning kit' of which you speak?
Cleaning? Making your own cleaners? I can't do either. I prefer to simply live in squalor.
Can I be an environmentally aware pig?
Until they come up with a biodegradable dog poo bag, I continue to do it by hand. Nah. I better not blog about it. *puts on thinking cap to come up with a "clean" green to talk about*
My post's up! :)
sigh...it is WAY past the deadline.
but my intestinal irritation and motherly duties unfortunately got in between myself and the computer.
i'm not that environmentally friendly...unless i can count not picking up dog shit as composting?
didn't think so.
Thanks everyone for your comments and posts. It was fun!
