Booty shots

Before we get to today's post, I wanted to thank everyone who traveled around on the blog swap yesterday. Sorry I didn't reply like I usually would - read on to find out why.

Today's post brought to you by the letters W-A-H and sponsored by walrussians. (Blognut and I had a long discussion about the plural of "walrus" and we're pretty sure "walrussians" is it.)

Sometimes the masses (ok, all 12 of you) are entertained by my migraine mumbles both here on the blog and on Twitter. It's true - I mess up words and I get silly. Even more so once I start on the pain meds. But in the end, there is pain. Pain I'd rather not experience. Pain I'd rather try to make light of because if I focus on it, I become insanely frustrated which just makes it worse.

This post is about the other side of my migraines. The pain. I spent several hours on Wednesday at the doctor's office. This particular migraine started Monday morning and it waxed and waned for several days. My new rule is that after two days, it's not going to vanish through any means I have available. When I woke up in worse pain than when I went to bed last night, I knew it was time to call for help.

Lucky for me, Joe was able to rearrange his schedule to work from home and drive me to the doctor. Long story short, the nurse evaluated me (my regular doc wasn't in) and ordered me a shot of Toradol (anti-inflammatory and anti-pain) followed by a shot of Imitrex (a migraine-specific med). They're both "fun" drugs in that they burn like crazy when injected. The Toradol went in the booty and she gave me the Imitrex in the upper arm near the shoulder. The first shot brought some relief, the second brought almost instant relief.

On the positive side, these took care of the migraine. I've had times when I've also had to receive anti-nausea injections and even morphine. Yeah, wimpy in the scheme of things.

Three hours later, I was back home to rest. She also gave me prescriptions for my allergies because those are certainly aggravating my migraine. Too much sinus action is keeping the pressure in my head in a bad way.

So not a warm fuzzy post today. But I sort of felt it was necessary to address the "other side" of my migraines. Otherwise, they might look like fun. Trust me, they're not. Not at all.

You poor girl I hope you feel better soon.

I once knew a group of Russian walrussians. I stayed well clear of them because they were too noisy, drank too much vodka and kept cracking walnuts.

I get those same kinds of migraines. People think they are funny. I think they suck. People also think they are just "headaches" because I'm still out and about during them. Sometimes you just can't take a week off of life despite the dizziness, blindspots, bloody noses, puking, and whatever other symptom is tossed at you.

I feel for you.

Most things tend to burn when they go in. I think it's the change in pH because, even if the solution is adjusted, it's still going to be a mixing of two things.

I wouldn't worry so much on the anti-nausea injections. Most meds work better and lighter on you GI tract if you've got a little food.

Also, the one migraine I've ever had caused me to vomit it was so bad. And I'm tough. I'll have you know, I stubbed my toe the other day--while watering my spice garden--and I only cried about it for two hours!

I'm sorry you have to deal with that - really. On the other hand, the drugs are ok, right? I like drugs. (No I don't.) (Well, maybe I do.)

Getting a bad headache can be earth-shattering for me, I can't imagine what migraine sufferers go through. I hope you feel better soon!

(not that I'm wishing you pain, but your migraine ramblings are quite funny!)

I hope somebody can figure out what's causing them (aside from sinus issues, which make everything worse) so you can just feel better all the time.

What do you mean? The other side of your migraines sounds like tons of fun! A barrel of laughs and monkeys!

Why can't I get migraines so I could get poked and prodded and be in pain day in and day out?

You are so lucky.

I get occasional headaches, but have never suffered a migraine, so can't say I feel your pain. But I can sympathize a tad. Hope you find the relief you need!

I'm so sorry you have to go through that. I remember when I was getting migraines on a daily basis and all of the meds out weren't working anymore. They wanted to give me occipital nerve blocks (shots in the back of your head)...I didn't do it, one day the migraines just went away. Hang in there.

Mo - SomeMonkey is pretty sure Russians are at fault for most of the evils of the world. Or at least with her computer. It's another reason I'm pretty sure walrussians is the proper plural.

Angie - thanks.

Lora - It sucks that we can't just curl up in a ball and hide all the time during migraines. I manage best I can but there comes a point when I just can't function.

mjenks - I'd never given any thought to pH (I'm not scientifically inclined) but that makes sense. I don't remember the anti-nausea meds burning but I do remember them being effective. This time, I didn't have the accompanying nausea. Vomit-migraines SUCK. Sorry about that toe!

blognut - the drugs are great if they work. When they don't work, all that loopiness for nothing. Cat hair!

Isabella - So much bad comes from my migraines. If I can find anything positive or silly in it, I try to capture it.

Snarky - it FINALLY completely broke around noon today. I can breathe, my head is clear... It's fabulous!

RAS - I think hormones set this migraine off. It just stinks I couldn't get over it on my own.

Pooba - Oh, a barrel of monkeys for sure! If you'd like to share in the fun, I'll gladly let you have my next migraine for me!

Tori - Thanks.

Melissa - Yeah, I love it when I "only" get a headache. Though those can be brutal as well.

S~DLT - Mine have become much less frequent but still more than I'd like. Noone's suggested nerve blocks at this point. I'm so glad yours went away!

Aw... I'm sorry. That sounds truly awful. I'm glad the drugs helped, though. I hope writing about it helps too, in its own way.

Btw, I thought your three-way exchange yesterday was hilarious!

I know what you mean about burning. I take a shot of medicine everyday for something - it also burns and leaves behind a nasty bump / mark. Kind of like a bee sting once a day. Good times.

Dang, girl. I hate to hear this about you because I know that you just don't need anything more on your plate! I am glad the docs can help you get relief, so that's a comfort. Do they know why the migraines show up?

I am really, really glad you're over the migraine. Feeling "normal" must feel GREAT after going through that.

I have wondered before why Becki gets migraines and I don't. I mean, our genes are basically the same. Is it something she ate or didn't eat growing up? Is it because she was lower birthweight (and I stole more nutrients in the womb?) Hard to say.

Glad you found some relief. I've only had them bad enough for shots once, and it was not pleasant.
One day I even crawled under my desk during a conference period and had to get a kid to call the office and page the nurse. they are not fun times.

Oh man. I can't imagine. I've probably only had 2 or so migraines in my life and they weren't fun. That really sucks that you have to deal with them more regularly. Glad you got some good meds though!! Hope you're feeling a lot better now!
