Six Word Saturday #396

Back to school for this student

Want to play along? All that's necessary to participate is to describe your life (or something) in a phrase using just six words. For more information, try clicking here. Feel free to explain or not explain. Add an image, a video, a song, nothing. I love seeing what everyone does with their entries.

Each week (probably on Sunday or Monday), I use random.org to select a bunch of entries to visit.  Or I visit everyone. Or even numbered entries. Or odd numbered entries. Or multiples of three. Depends on what's going on that week.  In addition, please visit the person ahead of you on the list (or visit everyone if you like!). That way everyone receives at least one visit!

If you play along in your blog, please add a link to the Mr. Linky. I appreciate a link back. Otherwise, you're welcome to leave your six words in this post as a comment.

Please be sure to link either to your main page or (preferably) directly to the 6WS post. Links to blogs that do not contain a 6WS entry will be removed (sorry, just the button in the sidebar doesn't count as participating).

Learning much - but always more questions

I'm on break from classes, which means...I'm taking other classes. Brilliant, me. Always more to learn, whether it's academic or not. Hope you learned something this week!

Question: I'm aware word verification is appearing before the comments. I have it disabled. It appears that if you leave the field blank, you can still leave a comment. I tried to figure it out when it first started but had no luck. I'll try again when I have some time.

Words about Balance

Remember my word of the year? Balance? Wow has that been a challenge.

Look at the posts on this blog if you'd like an indication. I've blogged 23 times since January 1st, of which one is my Word of the Year, one is a bulleted list of things I should do or blog about, one was a response to a tagged meme posts, five are "real" blog posts (if you define "real" in very loose terms), and 15 are Six Word Saturday posts. Not what I had in mind at the start of the year.

Not to mention the content of those 15 6WS posts. Not exactly sunshine and rainbows a lot of the time.

Now it's the second half of April. Well, tomorrow is, technically. And finally I'm starting to find some balance, as I alluded to this past Saturday: Destination Resignation 2.0 - feeling better already.

The very short version is that I had a freelance contract that was taking up a lot more time and energy than it was worth. It wasn't something I was enjoying and it wasn't paying well enough to make it worth the energy it was sucking from my life. I finally put things in motion last Friday to cancel that particular contract. Fingers crossed - I could be done with it as early as April 30th.

Which brings about a new balance challenge - I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the possibilities it opens up. I have a few commitments I need to tend to first. SO sorry to those I've left hanging in the meantime. I'll look for more contracts for work I love. But so many other things I want to do.

But I need to remember balance. Because it's hard to maintain it when you're so weighed down by commitments that suck your soul out of you.

It's only because of the support of Joe and some damn good friends that I haven't broken recently when things have been coming at me from all directions. At least this one particular source of stress is heading toward relief.

Thanks for sticking with me, folks.

An update on writing

I announced a couple of weeks ago that I would be blogging less frequently so I could focus on writing. Since then, I've had a few people ask how that's going.

So, here's how it's going.

I have, indeed, started writing again. And it felt glorious. Then I got very busy with paying clients. The good news is that I really missed writing while I was working on other things.

This week, Joe is away for work and I had big plans to write a LOT. So far, I've done just that. I have over 8k words so far since he left Sunday night. And when he gets back, I intend to keep writing regularly.

I need to remember how important that outlet is for me. I need to remember that this is a major goal that I've wanted to reach for a very long time and it's within site if I can just keep going.

What I'm working on right now is a novel. But I'm already forming plans for the book that will follow its completion. I think having a second project I'm looking forward to writing will encourage me to keep going on the current project, which I'm also enjoying very much.

I tweeted a few days ago that when I write a little, it makes me want to write a lot. It's an amazing feeling to have that desire. For me, it's a bit like the "runner's high" Joe describes after completing a hard run. Just, with less sweating.

What Joe's new job has taught me

During the last 6+ weeks since Joe started his new job, I've learned a lot of things I didn't realize before.

1. We have very different working styles. He likes loud music with words. I like quiet music with no words, if I have any music at all because generally, I prefer it to be quiet.

2. He's gone a lot - except for when he isn't. Well, duh, Cate. But what I mean is that he does travel a lot for work. But when he isn't traveling, he works at home. So it's feast or famine. Either 24/7 Joe or 24/7 no Joe.

3. We can only plan about a week in advance, which I can't blame as much on him as I thought I could. During the week, we can't plan much because he could have to leave at any time to go see a client, though generally we know this week what will be happening next week. Approximately. So I can blame his work for not being able to make plans! Except, his company is really great about getting their consultants home on the weekends and not expecting them to work during that time. But guess who almost always works nights and weekends? Yeah, me... We've turned down plans as often lately because of my contract as we have his job.

Overall, it didn't take long for me to adapt to his frequent travels. For the first four weeks, he traveled two-four days at a time every week. The last two weeks, he's been at home. It's been kind of nice, but I'd be lying to say I'm not going to enjoy some time to myself while he travels again this week.

Why I'm a Cat Person

File this under "Things I wouldn't know without Twitter."

A twitter conversation yesterday resulted in a serious "a-ha!" moment. That moment? The realization of why I am a cat person and not so much a dog person.

Warning: it's about to get a little EWWWW up in here.

Melinda's hungry dog decided to help himself to a snack from her toddler's little potty. And, because this is why Twitter exists, she shared her disgust with the rest of us. Which reminded me of the day my dog puked. And then ate it.

Cats may have their own issues but I've never seen a cat do either of those things. Which is why I am a cat person.

P.S. This post was for tomorrow. But I'm a moron and clicked "Publish" instead of "Save" and then I reverted back to draft but it was too late because it went via RSS so you can all read it anyways so WHATEVER. FINE. Have the post. See if I care.

P.P.S. But I'm not posting again tomorrow. Unless I'm a moron again.

P.P.P.S. It's entirely possible that if I'll be a moron again tomorrow.

Recently Overheard

My Memoir Writing class wraps up this week. One of our assignments over the last ten weeks was to eavesdrop on conversations in public, then rewrite them. Below are some of the things I overheard in public over the past weekend.

OH: (on the bike path) Suuuuuuuuuuuper slow passing on your left!

OH: (at the grocery store) I'm not trying to be difficult. I just want you to read my mind and tell me what I want to hear!

OH: (at the home improvement store) Does the "multiple installation discount" apply to toilets? Even if they're all in separate bathrooms?

What, they still count as "overheard" if I'm the one that said them, right?

Swear Jar

I've decided it's time to clean up my act regarding the curse words. Finally, you're thinking, a post NOT about writing!

WRONG!!!

If I'm going to take this writing thing seriously, I need to broaden my vocabulary. This first occurred to me while watching a recent episode of Food Network Star. Tyler Florence took one of the contestants aside and advised her very seriously that she needed to "develop a rolodex of good adjectives to describe things". Oh, come on, tell me you see the funny in that? Also, most people store their words somewhere other than a rolodex. Even more people no longer use a rolodex for anything. The point was driven home when watching some Gordon Ramsay show with a lot of bleeping. I don't want to risk the bleeping once I'm famous and on television.

I'm sharing this for two reasons:
  1. I need your suggestions for colorful words I can use instead. And I don't mean words like "fudge" and "crumb" - not swear-substitutions but more powerful words altogether.
  2. I'm keeping track of my swears and plan to donate $1 for each word I use that I've defined as off-limits. For the record, these words start with s and f. I want your suggestions for where I should donate that money to at the end of some time period I've yet to determine. No cause to great or too small.
I started my tip jar yesterday around noon and so far I'll be donating $3 to some very lucky charity. *&%#$!

Being Funny is No Joke

Yep, I'm writing about writing. Again. Because that's my thing right now.

This humor writing class is tricky. I love that the instructor is giving very specific and thorough feedback, but we have a bit of a disagreement in stylistic tastes. He's into stand-up and I'm into dramadies. He wants the funny to be slathered on generously and I'm more of a sprinkler of the funny.

And that's okay, because the point of this class is to learn how to bring out the humor. This means it's his job to point out every possible place we could potentially milk a story for more humor. It's like going to the batting cages, I suppose. You don't really spend all of your time playing baseball just batting (do you? I honestly know nothing about baseball), just like you don't spend all of your time writing focused on humor. Still, it's good to immerse yourself in the practice so you can call up the skill when you need it.

By contrast, I expect to submit the same work to my memoir writing class and have them find it hilarious but not quite as contemplative or personal as desired.

All this to say that I'm receiving positive feedback, both from the instructor on my assignments and from my classmates on my booth submission. But I'm feeling like I'm not funny enough. Or not as funny as I thought I might be.

On today's agenda: rewrite my post on celery migraines in a way that shows instead of tells about one of the stupidest moments I've experienced. Not that there's any shortage of those to choose from!

Update: There's a Groupon available today for $129 for a 6-wk Gotham course. Usually, these classes are $320 for six weeks. I'm assuming this doesn't include the $25 registration fee. Still, it's an amazing deal. It appears it can only be used on Nonfiction 101 and Creative Writing 101 - I've taken both and they're both really good, especially the Nonfiction course. I'm trying to see if I can use the Groupon for Business Writing since I've taken the other two but no answer so far.

This is not a sponsored post. Unless you count my usual sponsor, Joe.

Refresh - Refresh - Refresh

Overnight, my first submission to the writing booth went live. The booth is where class participants post their work for classmates to critique.

When I've taken these writing classes in the past, I've always submitted an older piece that I've been working on for awhile. It's usually already heavily revised and edited with feedback from several friends. This time, I'm taking a different approach, submitting pieces that are part of my larger work-in-progress.

The submission that went live last night is the introduction to my book, which I wrote just this past Sunday. I submitted it yesterday, meaning it was only 24-hours old when I released it into the wild. Sure, I made some revisions in that amount of time. But that's quite "new" to be sending off into the world.

Since I woke up this morning, about ninety minutes ago, I've refreshed my booth page at least half a dozen times, waiting for the first comment. I'm feeling a ridiculous amount of anxiety over it and hoping it's well-received. I'm hoping the comments provide some great feedback regarding changes I can make to strengthen the piece. I'm also crossing my fingers that I don't regret submitting something this fresh and dear.

Time to go refresh the page some more.

4.0

I FINALLY got that last grade from the class I finished just before Christmas. An A. Thank goodness, because I seriously never heard a word from that instructor or got any feedback on my work so if it had been less than an A, I would've had to punch some people in the face. It's much less effort this way.

I will be contacting the school with feedback about this class with the MIA instructor. I'm happy with that A, but I also feel like I didn't learn anything from the guy. I could've just bought the textbook and read that on my own for a whole lot cheaper. I have no idea what I did right or wrong with my projects so what did I actually learn?

Still, I'm done. I need to contact the school today to see about receiving my actual program completion "stuff", whatever that may be. But the classwork is finished and I did well. I'm not a braggy girl but I worked hard and I'm glad it paid off.

Next, I get back to that plan for world domination.

Celebration: Doing it Wrong

Remember how when I resigned from my job I celebrated by enduring my annual gynecologist exam? This is like that. Only worse.

Yesterday, I took my final final. I freaked out twice before it started. Once because my ever-so-helpful GPS takes ten years to acquire satellites. Maybe quit trying to negotiate acquisition and just borrow them for positioning, okay? Because I was only going about 6 miles away, it never DID figure out where the hell I was until I was already there. And until I had already called Joe completely spazzed out that maybe I was going the wrong way and why hadn't I bothered to check the directions before I left because I thought it was safe to rely on the GPS YOU bought me so really it's all your fault if I miss my exam and fail and die. All this over a 6 mile trip that involved exactly 3 turns.

Freakout #2 occurred once I arrived successfully at the testing center. My exam was open book, open notes. This handy information was written all over the syllabus and course instructions. I even verified it with the exam proctor last Wednesday. So imagine my complete meltdown surprise when she told me that I wasn't allowed to have anything but a pencil in the testing room! Wait, umm, what? She showed me where it said exactly that. I insisted she go back to her desk and check because I had verified with her on Wednesday. She said she'd call the school. Brilliant, since it was 9am at my undisclosed east coast location and only 6am at my California-based university. In the five minutes it took her to find the cover sheet indicating that indeed my study materials were allowed, I was already figuring out how to deal with failure.

The exam itself wasn't too bad, though it was hella-long. There were 16 questions. 17 if you count the fact that there were 2 completely different questions that the genius professor numbered as 15. Each was an essay, usually with multiple parts. The final question had 10 parts to it! I finished and probably did just fine but I hate feeling so rushed.

The rest of the day was fine. I did some final online shopping for Joe. Invoiced a client. Watched a marathon of something on HGTV. Enjoyed a lovely celebration dinner cooked by my husband, read a book, and went to bed.

It was in bed that I had the worst panic attack I've experienced in approximately a year. I've had attacks that seemed horrible but this was completely back in the old territory. Immediate freakout with no clear trigger. Stomach in knots. Cold sweat. Shallow breathing. All of the intense physical reaction that comes over my body over the span of 30 seconds. The longest and shortest 30 seconds ever, as I feel what's happening and I try to fight it but it can't be stopped. Joe brought me a chill pill and I eventually settled down.

I'm fine this morning. In fact, I'm going shopping at a busy plaza as soon as I hit post. The type of shopping plaza that makes me uncomfortable with crowds and traffic and craziness. The kind that brings on anxious feelings. But today is the 21st and the crowds won't decrease between now and Saturday so it must be done.

So off I go, fingers crossed that last night was an anomaly. Terrified that it wasn't. Determined to keep going.

P.S. No idea when I'll have an actual grade on that exam or receive my actual program completion. And in the calmness of this morning, it's easier to recognize what I've achieved. And easier to be so glad that school is over!

Almost Done!

I'll return to the regularly ignored scheduled #reverb10 prompts sonish, but for now, a little update on me. Because it's my blog. Were you expecting an update on someone else? Sorry to disappoint. Go read their blog then.

Monday and Tuesday, I handed in all of my final papers for the semester. And despite losing big points on two of them for things that I think are completely ridiculous, I ended all three Fall courses with an A. Go me!

That's not a brag. I hope it doesn't come off braggy. That's more of a - you all listened to me whine but it's because I was working seriously hard and look it paid off! So really, it's more of a thank you. Yeah, that's it.

All that stands between me and program completion right now is my self-paced PR course. I should've had it done months ago but it took a backseat to the crazyfest that has been my life since August. I'll be mailing my final project for that course early next week and then next Thursday morning I sit for the proctored exam. Which sounds a lot dirtier than it is. I think I confuse proctor with prostate but I don't have one of those so it's all good.

It felt good to scribble out an actual blog post just now, as opposed to a response to some prompt that I'm feeling or not feeling. I think my recent commitment to daily prompt thingys is just a carry-over from the whole structured assignment feeling of classes. I much prefer this sorta thing. Look for more of it!

In other news, 15 days until Christmas and I'm completely NOT done with anything for anyone. Except the niece and nephew because I bought them ridiculously adorable hats from C. Beth, who not only blogs but also runs and crochets. But probably not all at the same time. Unless she's way more talented than I realized, and considering I already think she's pretty talented, that would just be somehow unfair to the rest of us.

Have a lovely Friday, folks! And stay warm. Because I don't know about weather where you are but Tonya is freezing off her whiskers to the point of desperation. Aka sleeping on the bed with me at night.

Six Word Saturday

Describe your life (or something) in a phrase using just six words. For more information, try clicking here. Feel free to explain or not explain. Add an image, a video, a song, nothing. I love seeing what everyone does each week with their entries.

Holidays?  Not until finals are submitted.

Each week (probably on Sunday or Monday), I use random.org to select a bunch of entries to visit. That way, everyone has equal chance. In addition, please visit the person ahead of you on the list (or visit everyone if you like!). That way everyone receives at least one visit!

All that's necessary to participate is to post your own six words. You can post an explanation if you wish but it's certainly not required. If you play along in your blog, please add a link to the Mr. Linky. I appreciate a link back (shiny code below if you like!). Otherwise, you're welcome to leave your six words in this post as a comment.

Please be sure to link either to your main page or (preferably) directly to the 6WS post. Links to blogs that do not contain a 6WS entry will be removed (sorry, just the button in the sidebar doesn't count as participating).
