Thoughts on Valentine's Day

This post is especially for those who dislike today, but you're all allowed to read it. In fact, I insist.

Let me share a secret with you. A lot of us in long-term relationships don't care a whole lot either way about February 14th. In fact, the people who care most about Valentine's Day are:
  1. Greeting card companies, restaurants, florists
  2. People in a relatively new relationship
  3. People not in a relationship
Perhaps rather than snarling and hissing about Valentine's Day, you could try putting some love out into the world. Do something nice for a coworker, a friend, a neighbor, a family member... Maybe even a stranger. It will make them happy and likely make you feel good too!

In fact, I think that's the best way to acknowledge Valentine's Day - it's not about the expected things, it's about the surprises. We should all think outside the (heart-shaped candy) box and do something unexpected for someone today.

So instead of growling and making people feel guilty for enjoying today, try a smile. And, in the end, the love you take/ Is equal to the love you make. (from some Beatles song)

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone reading this little blog. I appreciate you all very much! <3

P.S. Just, please, whatever you do, do NOT say "Valentimes". First person I hear say that today is getting punched in the face.

I'm using Valentine's Day more to celebrate with my kids this year--Chickie's at the age where she cares about it. The Engineer & I are at ages where we really don't. :)

So I took the kids through the Krispy Kreme drive-through to get heart shaped donuts.

And was greeted by the employee there with a smiling, "Happy Valentime's Day!"

I love Valentine's Day! Not for presents and lovey-dovey stuff, but because I can decorate the house in hearts and pink and get away with it for a few weeks. Also, now that I have a kid I can get away with giving out those cute little kid cards again. We gave little cards with matching pencils this year.

My husband and I have been married too long to worry about Valentine's. He seems to think I will get upset every year when I say nothing is needed, but seriously I know he loves me and I don't need some stuff to be reminded of that.

I agree...with everything. Except for "Valentimes." That would give me fodder for making fun of someone (in a valentine kinda way).

Ole Boy and I don't think much about Valentines Day...however, my birthday, exactly one week later...well, we (translated "he") better think about it. :)

I think every day should be for celebrating love. And the only thing different with us between most days and today is that I got a card. Time for each other, "I love you" presents, etc, happen quite often with us anyway.

I've never heard people use Happy VD more than this year...crazy...but I agree on the giving to coworkers and wow what I hit I was...I brought 3 kinds of yummy cookies and little bags of chocolate kisses for everyone! Unexpected surprises are always a major HIT! I hope you had some great sunshine in your day too!

I hand-made all my Valentines this year. :) (stuffed owls with hand-written notes saying, "Owl" always love you Valentine. Will you be mine?)

And I did something nice for a stranger: We went to the local theatre to watch a movie and an older lady accompanied by a man in a wheelchair was looking for the family restroom. Our theatre doesn't have one, so I scoped out the women's restroom so she could take him in there. Then I guarded the door.

I had a great Valentine's Day! (non-commercialized too!) {I really can't help that my husband bought me a stuffed animal can I?}

THANK YOU! You said what i've been wanting to say perfectly! Seems like every year the snarling is getting worse and I am tired of it!
It takes away form what could be a beautiful day for every one!

I am so with you here, Cate! I can not stand it when people get all negative about Vday. I don't go out to eat (anywhere fancy) on Valentine's Day, never have, but mostly because I do NOT want to be stuck in those crowds! But I DO make a point to tell people I love them. Usually the kinds of people you don't see or say it to every day (sisters, mother, father, best friends, etc).

I like to think of Vday as the "Adult's christmas" if you didn't get it two months ago, now is the time to buy it for yourself or your loved on and finally have everything you wanted for Christmas, haha.

What a fabulous idea. Nothing worse than the woman married 25 years but still whining because Hubby didn't buy the correct number or color of roses!

Focusing on love, in general, rather than just romantic love makes so much more sense - and causes a lot less arguments.

I made rice krispie treats for my coworkers (aka Breakfast Bars!). I called the day: national single awareness day and wore black.

love it.
